In 2015, world leaders adopted the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.
Also known as the Global Goals, these 17 interrelated goals and their 169 associated targets are designed to guide global development, eliminate human rights violations and ultimately create a fair and prosperous world for current and future generations. The Alliance has a special interest in Target 8.7 of SDG 8.
Goal 8
“Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all.”
Target 8.7
“Take immediate and effective measures to eradicate forced labour, end modern slavery and human trafficking and secure the prohibition and elimination of the worst forms of child labour, including recruitment and use of child soldiers, and by 2025 end child labour in all its forms.”
Forced Labour
Forced labour can be understood as all work or service which is exacted from any person under the threat of a penalty and for which the person has not offered himself or herself voluntarily.
Modern slavery
Modern slavery is an umbrella term that covers forced labour, forced marriage and human trafficking. The common thread is that a person is being exploited, and cannot refuse or leave due to threats, violence, coercion, deception, manipulation and/or the abuse of power.
Human trafficking
Human trafficking involves the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harbouring and/or receipt of a person. It can include the threat or use of force, deception, abduction, the abuse of power or a position of vulnerability, or other forms of
Child labour
Not all work performed by children is child labour. International standards define child labour as work that is hazardous to a child’s health and development, demands too many hours and/or is performed by children who are too young. Usually, child labour interferes with a child’s right to education and to play.
AIMS
The road to Target 8.7 has been long and much good work has been done already. Alliance 8.7 accelerates these actions by focusing on three strategic objectives.
OBJECTIVE 1
Accelerate action
There is an urgent need to align country-level plans to end modern slavery and child labour with the ambitious deadlines set out in the SDGs. That’s why the Alliance identifies and works with Pathfinder Countries, which commit to significantly accelerated action.
OBJECTIVE 2
Conduct research and share knowledge
To fill data gaps in key areas, support governments on monitoring progress, and improve coordination across research agendas.
OBJECTIVE 3
Drive innovation and leverage resources
New approaches, technologies, and innovative solutions can offer an opportunity to accelerate action. The Alliance aims to foster collaboration between stakeholders to enhance innovative processes. For example, thematic Action Groups coordinate research, advocacy, and implementation in priority areas and South-South cooperation has been launched in all regions.
