IOM, ICAT, Alliance 8.7, and Anti-Slavery International are co-organizing a multi-partner side event focusing on the nexus between trafficking in persons and climate mobility. This event will take place at the IOM Climate Change and Human Mobility Pavilion during COP29, on November 18, 2024, from 4:00-5:00 PM.
The event aims to raise awareness on trafficking in persons risk factors in the context of climate change, environmental degradation, disasters and resulting displacement, focusing on actions to reduce vulnerabilities and build resilience. Trafficking in persons, including for forced and child labor and its hindrance to the Paris Agreement and greener economies, is a roadblock to achieving the Paris Agreement commitments and the goal of just transitions to greener economies and climate change adaptation. Addressing the connections between forced labour, climate change, and human mobility is crucial to protecting the rights of all groups, including migrants, and ensuring that no one is left behind in climate action.
COP29 provides a platform for sharing evidence and practical solutions supporting a just transition. This event will bring together governments, UN agencies, international organizations, businesses and civil society representatives to deepen understanding of the nexus between climate change, migration, displacement, and the risks of trafficking in persons and other forms of exploitation. This initiative aligns with Sustainable Development Goals 5.2, 8.7, 8.8, 10.7, and 16.2, as well as Objectives 2, 5, 6, 7, and 10 of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration.
This side event is open to State and international/regional organization delegations, as well as civil society, businesses, and trade union representatives attending COP29.
