Irina Todorova is the Head of Unit, Protection Division at the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
Why do we need a Migration Action Group now?
There are clear connections between migration and SDG Target 8.7 issues (human trafficking, forced labour, child labour, and modern slavery). Having in place a Migration Action Group can help ensure these connections are unpacked and leveraged. Recognising this, Alliance 8.7 members and Pathfinder Countries expressed the value of a dedicated Action Group on migration at the 2nd Alliance 8.7 Strategic Workshop in December 2022. With the support from partners (including Argentina, Australia, France, the UK, the ILO, ICMPD and Free the Slaves), we (IOM) relaunched the Migration Action Group in October 2023.
What are the main objectives of the Migration Action Group?
Our main objectives are to support Alliance 8.7 partners in: i) addressing root causes of forced labour, human trafficking, child labour, and modern slavery in migration contexts; ii) promoting safe, orderly, and regular migration pathways; iii) ensuring human rights of migrants are respected; iv) implementing evidence-based policies; and v) coordinating with different stakeholders.
How will the Migration Action Group achieve its goals?
To achieve our goals, we will collaborate closely with the Alliance 8.7 Supply Chains Action Group and build synergies with other global platforms (e.g., the Inter-Agency Coordination Group against Trafficking in Persons (ICAT)), commitments and pledges, and global and regional events (e.g., International Migrants Day on December 18 and World Day Against Trafficking in Persons on July 30). We are looking forward to carrying out activities in the next year through four workstreams: research and knowledge; resource mobilisation; strategy and policy development; and tools and technical cooperation. If your entity is interested in contributing to the Migration Action Group – either through financial or in-kind contributions – let us know!
What are the opportunities for Alliance 8.7 Pathfinder Countries?
The Migration Action Group benefits greatly from engagement with partners. Alliance 8.7 Pathfinder Countries are welcome to join the Migration Action Group – it is a platform for you to let us know your commitments and priorities in the context of migration and SDG target 8.7. The Migration Action Group is looking forward to supporting the implementation of roadmaps and discussing the cooperation modality with you through the four workstreams. For example, by defining measurable goals and indicators in the annual progress report on migration and other relevant areas (e.g., climate change and humanitarian crises) and by sharing knowledge on migrant protection and data accountability.
How can interested entities join this Migration Action Group?
Interested entities are invited to join us by contacting the Alliance 8.7 Secretariat (info@alliance87.org). We look forward to working with you!
